Featured: UNDP plugs US$75,000 into fighting TIP

The Human Services and Social Security Ministry and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on Thursday signed the project document for the initiation of a US$75,000 programme aimed at tackling human trafficking in Guyana.
 

 
The Human Services Minister Jenifer Webster, who was among the signatories, said the initiation of the project which seeks to offer assistance and guidance to “victims of and families affected by human trafficking” will take the fight against the inhumane act to another level as she expressed gratitude to UNDP for funding the project.

"The Guyana Millennium Development Goals (MDG) Progress Report 2011 is a key monitoring instrument to access various socio-economic policies.  The overall aim of the Report is to track and analyse the country's progress towards the achievement of the MDGs, but on a wider level, it serves as a report on national efforts to reduce poverty.  The findings of the Report are expected to influence Government processes, decision-making and resource mobilization and allocation efforts.  Furthermore, the key findings as a means to both enlighten and heighten development discussions among all national stakeholders, including Guyana development partners."

Overview

This year’s Human Development Report focuses on the challenge of sustainable and equitable progress. A joint lens shows how environmental degradation intensifies inequality through adverse impacts on already disadvantaged people and how inequalities in human development amplify environmental degradation.

Human development, which is about expanding people’s choices, builds on shared natural resources. Promoting human development requires addressing sustainability—locally, nationally and globally—and this can and should be done in ways that are equitable and empowering.
