PROJECT INFORMATION

Project name: MDG Support

Background
Guyana is one of the poorest countries in Latin America and the Caribbean (ranked 103 in the 2006 Human Development Report) and is one of the forty-one countries world-wide that has been classified as a ‘highly indebted poor country’ (HIPC). To qualify for the Enhanced HIPC initiative, each country was required to prepare a Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (PRSP).

The PRSP proposes a number of poverty reduction initiatives. A new PRSP will be developed in the end of 2007 and become the framework for Guyana’s socio-economic development. It is therefore critical that the new PRSP is MDG driven and assertively contributes towards achieving the MDGs, thus facilitating full integration of the MDGs into the development vision and planning process of the country.

The very limited availability of consistent, reliable time series data is a major impediment in setting baseline data and monitoring progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals. It is therefore important to localise the Millennium Development Goals to the Guyanese context, to ensure their relevance.

Objectives
The main objectives of the MDG support project are:

  • To provide assistance to the Government of Guyana (GOG) to ensure that national development plans and sector strategies are inspired by and contribute towards achieving the MDGs.
  • To build capacities to monitor these MDG achievements.
  • To raise public awareness of the MDGs to ensure feedback from civil society on policy framework and programming towards the achievement of the MDGs.

Achievements and expected results
The project is supporting the Government of Guyana in producing a status MDG Report. Furthermore, through this project UNDP will support the Government of Guyana in localising the MDGs.

MDG awareness material will be produced and MDG awareness meetings and seminars held.
